Viña Tarapacá 2001 Reserva Merlot (Casablanca Valley)

The purple luster may be the wine's strongest point, because the nose is over the top with wood, and below that it's weedy and sharp, with aromas of pickles and cabbage. In the mouth, modest plum and other red-fruit flavors seem covered by oak, but what doesn't get smothered is that ubiquitous bell pepper character that comes with almost every Casablanca red.
