Tarius 1999 Aldine Vineyard Zinfandel (Mendocino)

Lots of chocolate, carob and nut on the nose, plus raisin, more chocolate and tart blackberry on the palate—think granola bar, or trail mix, and you're in the right ballpark. This is a profile that generally piques my interest precisely because it is a little odd. Chalky, even pasty in the mouth, it closes with the same flavors until a long and bitter—half-metallic, half-Brussels sprouts—note takes over the back end. —D.M.
