A gorgeous beer, but definitely a sipper that's deserving of some time in the cellar. Caramel, vanilla, Bourbon-infused oak, chocolate liqueur and boozy licorice all attack your tastebuds and beat them into submission. Big and strong in the mouth with heavy anise and dark roasted coffee character accented by cigar tobacco, scorched caramel, s'more, molasses and raisin flavors. Thick, with low carbonation, this is not a traditional Barleywine—but it isn't unbalanced; it's just ridiculously decadent with a long boozy finish. Lauren Buzzeo

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
