Thorn Clarke 2018 Single Vineyard Selection Saleyard Road Old Vine Block Grenache (Barossa)

This is a rich, oaky Grenache, two descriptors that virtually never suit the variety. The crimson color suggests a full-bodied wine before the nose and palate confirm it. Charred, peppery oak and a meaty note can be found amid the plums and blueberry fruit. There's a good deal of alcohol here, but it's not hot. Mainly, this lacks the vibrancy and bright fruit found in so much of today's South Aussie Grenache. Christina Pickard
