Three Rivers 2005 Meritage Red Wine Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

The blend here is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot. Although there's quite a lot of PV, which can often dominate a Bordeaux blend, here it slides right in, adding graceful scents of violets at the top and stiffening the tannins with some meaty, smoky flavors and a bit of licorice at the end. This is smooth and supple, a lovely blend of fruit, flower, stone and soil, that is accessible yet substantial enough to tuck away for a few years. Paul Gregutt
