Tikal 2001 Amorío Malbec (Mendoza)

Based on the surreal label and heavy bottle, you almost expect the richest version of Malbec, but it's actually a bit reserved, emphasizing zingy red-berry fruit, modest oak and a racy mouthfeel. Ernesto Catena, son of Nicolas, is the proprietor, and he's done well in channeling the zest that Malbec can deliver. Michael Schachner
