Tim Smith 2020 Bugalugs Shiraz (Barossa)

Plump black cherry and plum fruit lead on this wine. The dense fruit is backed by notes of licorice, graphite and bay leaf, with mushroomy umami nuances. Acidity on the palate feels a bit shrill, even if it does give this chocolatey-rich wine a welcome lift. But it never quite gels with the sappy, drying tannins or the ripe fruit. Christina Pickard
