A junior Run Rig, in more ways than one: The Descendant's grapes come from a single vineyard made from Run Rig cuttings. The wine is aged in two-year-old Run Rig barrels, and, like its big brother, contains a small percentage of Viognier. The Viognier lends floral aromas to the nose; it's big and syrupy in the mouth at first, but smooth, silky tannins step in thereafter. Fruit is a little stewy, but that's the vintage conditions talking. 800 cases produced.

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
