Varvaglione 2017 Papale (Primitivo di Manduria)

The weighty glass bottle announces that this wine will be big, and indeed the nose brings breadth and depth right away, with cedar chips, underbrush and mushroomy umami notes against macerated berries, chocolate and sage. The palate has more dirt and tanned leather, with chocolate, blackberries and boysenberries, and tannins that are firm but forgiving enough to enjoy now. Danielle Callegari
