Verterra 2016 Malbec (Leelanau Peninsula)

Aromas of freshly cracked black pepper leap from the glass joined by vanilla, blackberry and bay leaf. Currant, vanilla, baking spice and bay leaf turn out on the palate with more of that distinct cracked black pepper, though not quite as intense as on the nose. Tannins are a little gruff but ample acidity holds it together. The finish leans on more charred notes and bitter chocolate with black-cherry flavors and a grip of sandy tannins that is quite persistent along with even more black pepper reemerging. Fiona Adams
