Volker Eisele Family Estate 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Smoothly textured, with subtle berry, earth, herb and spice aromas. The wine fans out on the palate to reveal a focused, sleek and refined style, brimming with blackberry, cassis, anise, coffee, chocolate and herb flavors. Tannins are firm but ripe. It's all framed in sweet, toasty oak. Long at the end. —J.M.
