Vrede en Lust 2003 Simond Red (Simonsberg-Paarl)

A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from the Paarl region, this wine is lightly wooded and medium-bodied with ash, smoke, and raspberry on the nose, and on the palate, more ashy, earthy, smoky heft and a bit of chocolate and tea. It's unusual and tough to tackle—the fruit is overpowered. Susan Kostrzewa
