Waipara Springs 2017 Pinot Noir (Waipara Valley)

A dusty-cherry hue, this is a spicy and oaky expression of Pinot, bursting with black pepper, thyme, anise, stalks and stones, all just as prominent (if not more so) than the red-currant fruit. The oak and stalky characters are prominent on the palate too, and the tangy fruit gets slightly overwhelmed. Tannins are a little astringent and the cool climate of this region and vintage is on display. It's a style some will love and others won't. Christina Pickard
