Wairau River 2015 Pinot Gris (Marlborough)

This wine starts with funky vegetal and nut aromas along with buttered toast. Underneath are tropical, pear and peach fruits, but they're being strong-armed by the reductive notes. The palate is creamy in texture, and the fruit is a touch sour. Still, there's a decent lick of acidity to keep this out of flabby territory. Drink now, but give this time in the glass to blow off and open up. Christina Pickard
