Wairau River 2020 Pinot Noir (Marlborough)

This Pinot evokes plump cherries both in color and aroma. There's plenty of spiced meat character, too, rounding, sculpting and adding a level of seriousness. The palate is almost surprisingly full-bodied but with chiseled, textured tannins amid the tart red and black fruit. A little chunky and oaky for a Pinot, there's a touch of alcohol heat. Might benefit from more robust food pairing like balsamic vinegar-glazed portobello mushrooms or even steak. Christina Pickard
