Waterford 2009 Cape Winemakers Guild CWG 2BB Red (Stellenbosch)

Winemaker: Kevin Arnold. This Bordeaux-style blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc was aged 26 months in French oak, although it's so well integrated and harmonious with the rich fruit core, one would likely not suspect it. Earthy, ashy notes of cigar and green peppercorn add depth to the black plum and berry fruit aromas and flavors, with additional glimmers of licorice root, coffee grinds and charred oak that add heft. Boldly flavored, with aggressive tannins and a gripping structure, this is a very burly, masculine-feeling wine. Drink 2017–2022. Lauren Buzzeo
