87pointsYealands 2018 Estate Single Vineyard Pinot Noir (Awatere Valley)

Yealands's single-vineyard Pinot is a dense, rich wine that currently sits under a blanket of mealy, charred oak. There's plump red berry fruit and earthy, peppery nuances, too, and the fruit does fight its way to the fore with time in the glass or decanter, but the barrel nevertheless wears a heavy cloak, which encircles the palate as well. Tannins are savory, and there's an appealing silky texture, but the oak feels sour and mealy, particularly at the finish. Christina Pickard
