Going to extremes

As he’s taken the helm of Fetzer Vineyards’ new high-end line of wines, the Chile-born Donoso works from the company’s Bonterra Organic Vineyards property in Mendocino County. He launched the Fringe Collective in 2018, which focuses on making classic varieties from extreme vineyard sites, beginning with Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and Central Coast Pinot Noir. Donoso believes that the area’s immense natural challenges give him the tools to make wines of unbelievable depth and character, a trial he’s met with enthusiasm and vigor. —Inset photo by Erin Malone
