“Did you know that Riesling glows when under black lights?” asks Vourvoulis. “We didn’t either until we started drinking it in glow-in-the-dark teepees and throwing wine parties in nightclubs.” Vourvoulis, the “wine guy” at Hatchet Hall in Los Angeles, dreamed up WineRave with Leer, a fellow industry veteran. Injecting fun, whimsy and a bit of magic, the duo organizes irreverent, wine-focused dance parties in art galleries, warehouses and downtown bars. The parties aim to challenge preconceived notions about wine by “subverting given aromas, flavors and colors,” says Leer. “After all, wine’s greatest achievement is that we enjoy it.”
