This natural wine bar and izakaya pivoted to an outdoor pizza and burger stop (still with plenty of natural wine). It also took a good long look at how to better support its community.
“In Georgia, our governor provided no safeguards for restaurants or their workers, and did not prioritize our industry for vaccines,” says Joshua Fryer, general manager and beverage director. “A guaranteed living wage is still out of reach; health care is a rarity; pressure to work while sick is still common.”
The restaurant’s management did what it could to help individuals who were suffering. This meant providing CSA boxes to people who are undocumented and might therefore have a harder time filing for unemployment, as well as selling wine and CSA boxes at the restaurant to help support local farms. Outdoor cookouts added levity and normalcy.
More aware than ever of pay disparity, the restaurant also raised wages for kitchen staff and implemented a 20% service fee in place of tipping.
