While most restaurant workers found a new sense of community as Covid threatened their livelihoods, Chef Melissa Miranda’s restaurant Musang became a community space. Its Community Kitchen feeds needy Seattleites for free, no questions asked, and the “Little Wildcats” program connects children with Filipinx food via meal kits that provide hands-on cooking experiences.
“Musang is a way for so many Filipinx people to access community, memory and love,” says Chef de Cuisine Jonnah Ayala. “I’ve never worked for a restaurant that cares as much for my personal growth as Musang has, and I’m so glad that our guests—Filipinx and otherwise—can also find a home and a safe space with us.”
