6 Must-Have Summer Rums
Perfect for tropical drinks and party punches, here are six rums you won't want to miss. Each is a bit different—from a luxe white rum and funky rhum agricole to a brand-new, celebrity-backed chocolate rum—but all are worth seeking out for end-of-summer sipping.
Part of a special-edition line to honor the founder of Bacardi and 150 years of production, NEO is made with rums from one to eight years old, making it one of the oldest white rums on the market. The result? A silky rum perfect for making top-flight mojitos.
Tawny and bright in the glass, this luscious rum shows rich caramel, brown sugar and hazelnut. Vintage-dated rums are rare—most are made with a blend of various years—so consider saving this for sipping. It’s sure to elevate a classic Mai Tai, though.

Martinique’s famed rhum agricole is noted for its delightful tropical funk. This VSOP walks the line between sweetness and spice, with hints of bright banana and salty tang on the finish. Sip it in the national drink of Martinique, Ti’ Punch, with cane syrup and a hearty squeeze of lime.
There’s a good reason this spiced rum is a bartender favorite. It’s balanced and delicately spiced with ginger, cinnamon and allspice from the first sip to the lingering, lightly spicy finish. Try it out in a fruity rum punch.
Selvarey Cacao (Panama; Pacific Plate Spirits, West Hollywood, CA). $30
Probably best known as the rum backed by pop star Bruno Mars, this bottle has serious provenance. Selvarey collaborated with Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez, the famed master blender, 35-year veteran of Havana Club rums and the former Cuban minister of rum, to create this chocolate-flavored treat (as well as a white rum). It’s soft and delicious, with a slightly nutty flavor and a dusty cocoa finish. Mix with cold-brew espresso and coconut milk for a memorable coffee-spiked libation.
A top pick for tiki and tropical drinks, this honey-scented rum shows lots of brown sugar and spice, plus an enticingly untamed, funky finish. Since it’s “Navy Strength” at 57% alcohol by volume (114 proof), it’s best mixed into cocktails like a citrusy daiquiri.
