A Blue Margarita Recipe for Anyone ‘Who Loves Life and Joy’

It may look otherworldly, but this blue margarita recipe is easy to make at home. All you need to do is substitute blue curaçao for the orange liqueur in your go-to margarita recipe.

Blue curaçao is a type of liqueur made from bitter oranges; other members of its family tree include triple sec, Cointreau and Grand Marnier. “The blue style is simply a dyed cousin,” explains Wine Enthusiast spirits reviewer Kara Newman.

Of course, orange liqueurs are diverse, with different levels of sweetness and bitterness, so, depending on your preferences, you might want to add a saltier rim or more lime juice.

Flavor profiles aside, turning your typical margarita blue is a festive choice.

“Go for blue curaçao if you’re a cool person who loves life and joy,” writes John deBary in Drink What You Want.

What’s the Best Blue Curacao?

Every ingredient in your cocktail affects how it will taste, and blue curaçao, a category of orange-flavored liqueurs, is no exception.

Giffard Blue Curaçao is a quality bottle with balanced bitterness, sweetness and acidity. Drillaud Blue Curaçao and Bols Blue Curaçao are more affordable options with sweeter flavor profiles.
