The Spiked Dalgona Coffee Recipe

The social media phenomenon dalgona coffee, also known as whipped or fluffy coffee, owes its digital stardom to either South Korean television or TikTok, depending on which corner of the internet you believe. The episode of “Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant” in which it makes an appearance has been watched some 71,000 times on YouTube, and TikTok user @iamhannahcho’s dalgona coffee post has 12.4 million views and counting.

Made with pantry ingredients like granulated sugar and instant coffee, the drink combines ice and milk beneath a frothy, coffee-colored cap. It’s easy to make and infinitely customizable.

This boozy version features Cognac, but you can certainly swap in dark rum, Bourbon, whiskey or even amaro. Try it with whatever milk you have on hand—almond and coconut milks are lovely here—and adjust the sugar to taste.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon instant coffee
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
½ tablespoon hot water
2 tablespoons Cognac or other spirit
4 ounces milk

Directions

Fill a rocks glass with ice. Combine coffee, sugar, water and spirit in your largest mixing bowl (it will splatter). Using a hand mixer on medium-high, blend until the mixture becomes frothy, and then creamy, and eventually fluffy, about 3 minutes. Moving quickly, pour milk over the ice in your rocks glass. Float your spiked fluffy coffee atop the milk using a spatula or spoon.

When you’re ready to drink, stir to combine. Serves 1.
