Wine is fueling creative and funny cultural podcasts. People across music, television, movies, fashion and books all love wine, but it doesn’t stop there. The truth is, the right glass can pair with just about any facet of culture, and, increasingly, people are digging into wine’s pop partners through podcasts. To see what works, all one needs to do is look at the slate of all those available. True crime, which has become a pop sensation unto itself, seems to be a choice pairing for wine. Wine & Crime, launched in 2017, has more than 500,000 weekly downloads and seems to be leading the charge. On it, three friends—Lucy Fitzgerald, Amanda Jacobson and Kenyon Laing—decide on a bottle of wine to drink and a crime to discuss over Skype. Other options for those who like to pair a glass with murder are White Wine True Crime! and Wine and Punishment. Of course, murder’s not everyone’s beat. Sports & Corks, hosted by friends Emily Cornell and Emily Jurenka (who works in community relations for the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche) seems to have cornered the market on athletic pairings. “People don’t have time to watch every game, just like people don’t have the time to necessarily try a wide variety of wines throughout the year,” Cornell says. “People have their go-to wines and teams to watch. Our podcast addresses both of these things: We narrow down games and we narrow down wine selections.” Jurenka notes that wine also has a spot in the sports world, becoming a hobby for NBA players like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Draymond Green. Music aficionados, meanwhile, may be lucky enough to find a podcast that speaks directly to their preferred genre—Jermaine Stone’s Wine & Hip Hop asks guests in either industry to pick a song that he’ll then find a bottle to pair. Rock’n Vino chats tunes with winemakers and vino with rockstars. The conversational format of a podcast makes it easy to discuss wine in tandem with culture. Take a listen and find your favorites.
