Wente Vineyards is celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2023, making it the longest continuously family-owned and operated winery in the United States.
Located in the historic Livermore Valley, Wente Vineyards is just 35 miles east from San Francisco, where its terroir has always been characterized by the morning fog that rolls off the Pacific Ocean, imbuing each grape with bracing energy before giving way to the afternoon sun. The winery draws from its 3,000 acres of estate vineyards in the Central Coast including Arroyo Seco, Monterey and Livermore Valley.
The Wente family is credited with many firsts, including being America’s “First Family of Chardonnay” after Ernest Wente introduced Chardonnay to America in 1912. Today, over 75% of all California Chardonnay stems from the Wente Clone and the Wente Family property.
Today, the winery is owned and managed by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family. Their goal is to ensure the family business lasts another 140 years. Already a certified sustainable vineyard and winery from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CCSW), recent efforts paved the way for Wente Vineyards to receive The Green Medal Leader Award last year – one of the most important sustainability achievements in California.
